Tori Amos - God

I remember one afternoon circa 1992, driving from my job in Tempe to my home in downtown Phoenix and listening to Tori being interviewed on NPR. For some reason, I think it was with Terry Gross on "Fresh Air", but so far, I can find nothing on the web to confirm this. I think the reason that that interview stuck with me is because I was again puzzled by how an artist could be so blatantly blasphemous and not be incurring the wrath of god- I mean, how just much was the almighty supposed to take from an uppity female like Ms. Amos? Hmmm? Anyway, I still remember how liberating it was when I finally threw off the shackles of my own religious prison to finally be able to enjoy this song the way I should have been free to enjoy it all along. Now, I'm grateful to Tori, and all the those like her, who were willing to criticize and question. They may not have been the driving force behind my own personal deprogramming, but they were a catalyst and eventually a comfort when I discover the strength to not only abandon the religion of my youth, but to abandon religion altogether. Thanks Tori.

God

by Tori Amos

God sometimes you just don't come through
God sometimes you just don't come through
Do you need a woman to look after you
God sometimes you just don't come through

You make pretty daisies pretty daisies love
I gotta find what you're doing about things here
a few witches burning gets a little toasty here
I gotta find why you always go when the wind blows
tell me you're crazy maybe then I'll understand
you got your 9 iron in the back seat just in case
heard you've gone south well babe you love your new 4 wheel
I gotta find why you always go when the wind blows

[give not thy strength unto women
nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings]

Will you even tell her if you decide to make the sky fall
will you even tell her if you decide to make the sky

God sometimes you just don't come through
God sometimes you just don't come through
Do you need a woman to look after you
God sometimes you just don't come through
