Minor Threat - Filler

Alright, here goes. I've got a spreadsheet with over 50 songs that speak to me as an atheist/agnostic/skeptic/freethinker/pastafarian. I'm gonna see how much blogging stamina I have and see if I can't post all of them.

The first song I want to post is Minor Threat's “Filler”. I particularly like this song because when I first discovered it, I was a young Mormon boy and listening to it made me feel
  • guilty
  • like debating Ian McKaye
  • kind of sophisticated, I could listen to something I knew I didn't agree with

Of course, now I really like the message. I read somewhere that Ian claimed in an interview that the song is not an attack on Christianity or religion, but directed at a friend that quit a band because of his Christian girlfriend. I dunno. Not knowing the back story, I always thought that the song was definitely directed at religion. Read the lyrics and make up your own mind.

Filler

by Minor Threat

What happened to you?
You're not the same
There's something in your head
Made a violent change

It's in your head
Filler

You call it religion
You're full of shit

Was she really worth it?
She cost you your life
You'll never leave her side
She's gonna be your wife

You call it romance
You're full of shit

Your brain is clay
What's going on?
You picked up a bible
And now you're gone

You call it religion
You're full of shit

Filler
